How we remember

How We Remember. An Exhibition of personal histories from World War One.

West Berkshire Museum will open a new exhibition in October and is looking for special local items to feature.

How We Remember commemorates the centenary of the end of World War One. Focusing on the histories of the people of West Berkshire, it will explore how cherished memories cling to ordinary objects, enabling moments to be shared across generations.

The Museum is asking West Berkshire residents to loan possessions that were owned or used by family members in the First World War, and to share the personal history behind these precious items. All types of objects are of interest, as long as they reveal a unique insight into the years from 1914-1918. It could be a piece of wire from a trench, a sweetheart pincushion, a piece of trench art or a letter sent from France.

The items will be needed for the duration of the exhibition, which ends in May 2019.

Residents are asked to bring their objects and memories to West Berkshire Museum on Saturday 23 June between 10 and 4 pm.

Anyone unable to bring their possessions in on this date can contact the Museum from Wednesday - Sunday 10 am till 4 pm by calling (01635) 519562 or email Museum [at]
